River Recreation Pays for Itself in Calgary

July 2026

An Economic Impact Analysis of a proposed whitewater park in downtown Calgary will pay for itself in six and a half years. Crane Associates recently completed the analysis for the city as part of flood mitigation infrastructure being proposed. The study showed that revenue from visitors to the park will provide the city with tax revenue of nearly $1million CAD annually.  River recreationist at this site will also support between 15 and 50 jobs that will generate between $700,000 and $2.5m in household income and contribute a total of between $2.6m and $8.7m in economic activity in the local economy.  Since the project has a life span of 30-years, the revenue from recreational boaters and surfers will also contribute to the flood mitigation infrastructure costs starting after year seven, thereby help protect from the loss of life and property to the citizens of Calgary.
